Kaleka’s Crafting Corner Issue #1: Gear Choices and You.

In this series we will be delving into the crafting system of ESO and how you can use it to outfit yourself with the best weapons, gear, potions, food, and drinks to meet the many challenges that will face you in your adventures across Tamriel. In time this series will grow to include in-depth guides, videos, Q&A’s, and breakdowns of the best gear depending on classes, builds, and playstyles.

To start us off, I have put together this guide as a kind of one-stop-shop for information on the many choices that face you. ESO has done their job when it comes to giving you a wide variety of options for how to outfit yourself. Some of these options include 3 different Armor types with 22 choices available, 6 weapon types with 12 weapons to choose from, and a wide variety of potions, food and drinks to consider. If that were not enough to make you dizzy, you are also faced with variables such as:

    • Typesign
    • Item Level 
    • Quality
    • Style
    • Set Bones
    • Traits
    • Glyphs

Like I said there are lots of possibilities to consider, so much so it can be totally overwhelming when trying to decide what you want crafted, much less when you need it. To make it a little easier for you let’s go over the various factors that need to be taken into account when choosing what you want crafted. We’ll then cap this segment off with a simple chart you can use as a template when requesting the assistance of a crafter, as well as resources available to help you find the right crafter for you.

Armor and Weapons Types

Your first choice will be what type of armor and weapon you want. This will be based on your class, play style, and possibly racial choice.

The beauty of ESO is that you are able to use any piece of armor and any type of weapon you want, any time you want. So let’s get down to business.

Of course you are free to mix and match these any way you like depending on your class, build and/or play style (Full guides on armor and weapons coming soon).

Item Level and Quality

Once you’ve got an idea of what you want to have crafted, your next set of choices will be what levels you want your gear crafted (how often you want to trade out gear) and the quality of your gear. When choosing a crafter you will need to take into consideration what passive skills they have invested points into since this will determine what level and quality of items they are able to craft. Each craft has its own passive skills so be sure to familiarize yourself with them. Here is handy guide that goes into more detail on each crafting skill line.

Each level has its own requirement for materials as you can see below. Items will be white after they are crafted and can then be upgraded to Fine, Superior, Epic, and Legendary. Blacksmithing, Clothing, and Woodworking use different items to reach the desired effect as seen in the chart, also the more of that item that is used the greater the chance of success. There is always a risk however that the item will be destroyed in the process, even with 100% success rating.

Not all levels are created equal and acquiring tempers can be a lengthy process, as well as expensive. I’ve included a breakdown of when to have your gear made and what quality to choose. These are suggestions only and not set in stone.

Weapons

      • Trade out at level 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, V2, V4, V5, V6, V8, V10, and V12
      • Use blue quality for level 10 – 20
      • Use purple quality for level 30 – V10
      • Use yellow quality for V12

Armor

      • Trade out at level 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, V2, V4, V5, V6, V8, V10, and V12
      • Use green quality for level 10 – 30
      • Use blue quality for level 40 – 50
      • Use purple quality for level V2 – V11
      • Use yellow quality for V12

Style

Style 2Style 1Your next choice will be what style you want your Armor and Weapons crafted in. This choice will also influence who you have make your items. The crafter has to have learned the motif book to be able to craft that particular style, or be a member the race.

To see what your armor and weapons will look like, a good resource is
www.eso-fashion.com where they have a growing picture library for both armor and weapons, as you can see by the two examples.

Style materials are easily acquired at your local blacksmith, woodworking, or clothing shop, as well as from looting and breaking down items. Most crafters will have an assortment of these on hand.

The styles Ancient Elf, Barbaric, Daedric, and Primal are a different story, however. Not only are the motif books hard to come by, but so are the materials as well. The style material for these 4 is most prevalent in veteran level areas, hirelings, and from deconstructing items.

Set Bonuses

Set itemsYour next choice will be which items set(s) you want to wear, depending on the provided bonus. Set bonuses are separate from enchantments and traits, but there are a few that can enhance the effectiveness of both. Since sets usually offer bonuses for wearing 3, 4 or 5 items from the same set you can wear items from multiple sets to get more than one bonus.

Each craftable set has a trait requirement from 2 to 8. These are how many traits the crafter needs to have researched per piece of gear. This is a determining factor when choosing a crafter because it takes a lot of time and dedication to learn 8 traits for each item.

Traits

Armor traitsFinally, you have one final choice and you’re ready to have someone make your armor and weapons. You must decide what traits you want on each piece of armor and weapon. These are additional bonuses that can be added to your gear which allow you to imbue effects that act entirely exclusive of enchantments and set bonuses on the gear.

Many of these traits, however, interact with enchantments as well, empowering them or increasing their overall duration or the effectiveness. You will need to have the appropriate gem and find a crafter who has researched the specific trait(s) you want for each crafted item.

Most crafters will have a stock of these gems on hand, but they can also be acquired though deconstructing items, hirelings, and looting containers.

Glyphs (enchantments)

Armor enchantmentsOnce you’ve had your gear crafted it’s time to find an enchanter. Enchants are an additional bonus that you can add to armor, weapons, and jewelry. Any item that does not have a closed lock symbol on it can be enchanted. You can enchant equipped items as well as those found in your inventory.

To add an enchantment to an item right-click on it and select Enchant. A box will appear showing what glyphs you have available. Once applied, the enchantment appears as a bar under your item’s stats. Be sure to keep an eye on them because they lose power over time and will need to be recharged using Soul Gems. You can use any level soul gem up to your current level although it will take more to charge your item. Enchanting is one of the most complicated crafts in ESO and can take some time to understand.

For the purpose of this guide, the most important thing is to know what type of glyph you want and what quality you want it made in. Unlike armor and weapons, the quality is fixed and cannot be upgraded later. Aspect Runes determine the quality and Potency Runes determine the level. The enchanter will be able to tell you which Potency Rune you will need.

    Great article @Kaleka!

    I’m not doing class this summer, so I hope to be online more now. I do have a new work schedule, so I won’t be on as often as I used to. I have been working on my crafts still though and my other toons to bring up their crafting. So I should be able to craft all gear and weapons up to level cap for woodworking and clothing within a month. Currently can do that with blacksmithing and I’d be more than happy to craft for people, particularly in the guild.
